Friends of Burlington Gardens

This year we supported increased participation of underserved Burlington area residents in community, school, neighborhood, youth, senior and garden group projects.

Connecticut League of Conservation Voters Education Fund:

We provided support for their ‘Environment 101 Program’ and its associated Environmental Briefing Book. The goal of the project is to increase people’s understanding of the key environmental issues facing the state by conducting a series of meetings in communities around the state.

Florida Progressive Information Network:

The Humanists of Florida Association has an initiative to develop an internet based communication system to link progressive organizations in the state of Florida.

Pesticide Education Project Logo

Pesticide Education Project

The Agricultural Resource Center received a grant to support their school-based ‘Toxic-Free Kids’ program. This is a community-based program that organizes parents, teachers and students to reduce children’s toxic exposures by replacing toxic pesticides with low-cost, common-sense pest control programs in North Carolina schools.

This organic farm and education center received a small grant to offset expenses of a farm-based workshop series. The workshops are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences for school and community members. The areas they target in this request are; organic gardening, alternative eco-building, sustainable forestry, renewable energy, preserving the harvest & woodcrafting.

The AFSC of Vermont received a grant to hire a Youth Organizer to work with high school and college aged youth to help them to organize actions around peace issues.

The Dogwood Alliance received a grant to continue their market strategy to transform the world’s largest timber company’s practices. They use market leverage upon targeted corporations with the goal of protecting southern forests.

Compass Montessori School, Wheat Ridge Campus

Compass Montessori School, Wheat Ridge Campus received a grant to establish a Spanish Language Course for their elementary grade students to expose students with another language opportunity in the comfort of their classroom setting. The school seeks to expand students understanding of another language and culture and to instill sensitivity to cultural diversity thereby increasing tolerance.

Food Works at Two Rivers Center

Food Works received a grant to support their Farm to Table Food and Nutrition Education Program. This program is a comprehensive food distribution and education initiative that makes locally grown, fresh foods available to underserved populations in Vermont. Food grown by area farmers in Central Vermont is delivered to congregate senior meal sites, health facilities, schools and local food pantries.

This year we supported The ISE Biotechnology Project to continue to provide grassroots leadership, research and education for the movement to challenge the use of genetic engineering in agriculture, particularly in Vermont and New England. Current priorities include the Safe Food Community Media Project, which is bringing issues around GMOs and local food in Vermont schools.

The Block Foundation continued support for Minuteman Media. Minuteman Media was created to inform people who have little access to progressive opinion about alternative perspectives and targets small circulation newspapers to receive weekly dispatch of progressive viewpoints for publications in their editorial pages.

We continue to provide general support to The Peace and Justice Center in Burlington. The PJC seeks to educate and mobilize many more Vermonters around the effects of: US militarism here at home and abroad; economic and racial injustice; and issues of peace and human rights.

A zero-waste press conference sponsored by the Toxics Action Center

Toxics Action Center

The TAC received a grant this year to support their Zero Waste Campaign. The solid waste problem in Vermont is intense and persistent. In order to address the ever-increasing municipal solid waste problem and the decreasing amount of land fill space, the Toxics Action Center and the Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District developed the Zero Waste Campaign. The goal of this project is to reduce waste through creating a zero-waste program statewide in Vermont.
